The short answer

After eating, a great deal of blood is sent to the abdomen, and the body puts the rest a little further back for a while. Tests are usually taken fasting, and much of the day is spent after a meal.

After a Meal You Are a Slightly Different Body

After a meal comes drowsiness. Some people find their eyes closing where they sit; others feel briefly lightheaded standing up. I do not put this down to laziness or to age alone. The body after eating really is a slightly different body.

Eating Sends a Great Deal of Blood to the Abdomen

When food arrives, the digestive organs begin work. The stomach and intestine move, digestive fluids are released, what is absorbed is carried away. This work takes a great deal of blood.

So the body sends much more blood toward the abdomen. Depending on what was eaten, that increase runs from 25% to 200%, and it continues for hours. If you eat three meals, a good share of your waking hours is spent in this state.

The amount of blood in the body is fixed. Send a large share one way and the rest has to be adjusted accordingly.

Meanwhile the Rest Is Put a Little Further Back

So after a meal the body adjusts several things together. The heart beats somewhat more often, and vessels elsewhere narrow to hold pressure. When that adjustment goes well, we notice nothing at all.

When there is little margin in that adjustment, it shows. Some people are markedly drowsy after eating, lightheaded on standing, heavy-headed. It is more so with age, and more so with a large single meal. It is a question of how much is left to hold up the rest while the body sends a large share to the abdomen.

Tests Are Usually Taken Fasting

Here the story meets what this part is about.

Blood tests are generally taken fasting, and for good reason: matching conditions is what lets yesterday be compared with today, and one person with another. Blood pressure, likewise, is usually measured seated after a rest.

But a value obtained that way is the value of a body with its conditions matched. And the hours when people feel unwell are usually outside those conditions — after eating, mid-work, toward evening. That is how "all the tests are normal, and it happens every time I eat" comes about. The two sentences speak of a body under different conditions.

When It Happens Is the Thread

In the consulting room I often ask how the timing relates to meals: right after or an hour or two later, what makes it worse, whether smaller portions ease it. The same drowsiness calls for looking in different places when the timetable differs.

And what can be done is usually modest: smaller portions taken more often, not lying down or standing up abruptly right after eating. It reduces what the body must handle at once.

That said, if you have actually lost consciousness after a meal, if chest pain comes as a tightening, or if you vomit severely after eating — that is a different story. Being examined comes first.


We think of the body as one state, and we test it that way. But the body spends the day switching conditions several times over.

If you are drowsy and dizzy only after meals, that is not being oversensitive. It may mean the body of that hour is doing other work.
